Budgeting for Hiring a Butler

These professionals will expect £40,000+, a salary that reflects the market rate and their experience. However, employers can account for staff using family accommodation as part of their package or the salary can increase depending on working hours and responsibility.

It’s worth noting that these amounts can vary based on specific needs and prevailing market conditions. For instance, if the role demands frequent travel or proficiency in multiple languages, compensation should reflect these added skills and responsibilities.

Additionally, don’t forget to factor in the employer’s National Insurance contributions, which approximately add an extra 10% to the gross salary.

Considerations For Hiring a Butler

  1. Accommodation

An estate manager’s job is strongly tied to affairs within the family home and therefore it is natural that they will be offered personal accommodation inside the home. They may even be asked to travel to holiday apartments and villas and live with the travelling family. The salary offered should take into account these circumstances.

The accommodation provided should be comfortable and private. A double bed, furniture and free use of WiFi are expected. They may live in a room, on a floor with other staff or in an outbuilding apartment. On some occasions, the butler will live external to the property.

 

  1. Car

Some estate managers are asked to pick up things or run errands. This requires the use of a vehicle and the family should allocate the use of one to the staff and make sure they are insured to use it. If the estate manager uses their car, the costs of this should be reimbursed by the employer.

 

  1. Commute

If your butler does not live in the residence, you will need a professional who lives close by. This will also enable flexibility in working hours.

 

  1. Travel

The salary of the estate manager should be increased accordingly if they take on more hours or are away from family for a significant period. This is most likely to occur if they are asked to travel with the family, such as on trips abroad.
