Hire an Excellent Butler / House Manager

A house manager or butler is a professional in charge of running a private estate. Their roles and responsibilities are extensive, including but not limited to overseeing maintenance of the property and other staff members, organising private events and managing budgets. Their work is fast-paced and requires attention to detail, time management and impeccable organisation skills.

Estate managers or butlers enable the family of the estate to delegate the management of all their private staff to them. The butler must liaise with other personal staff members, such as chefs, chauffeurs and housekeepers to make the estate run smoothly and as desired by their employer.

Reliable house managers are not easy to source, but HazeltonClive has contact with estate managers that have worked for HNWIs, celebrities and VIPs. These candidates are as discreet as they are essential to the running of an estate. What to Pay Your UK House Manager?

We do not block clients from directly discussing wages with candidates. These professionals will expect £50,000+, a salary that reflects the market rate and their experience. However, employers can account for staff using family accommodation as part of their package or the salary can increase depending on working hours and responsibility.

Key Considerations Before Hiring a Butler in the UK

  1. Accommodation

An estate manager’s job is strongly tied to affairs within the family home and therefore it is natural that they will be offered personal accommodation inside the home. They may even be asked to travel to holiday apartments and villas and live with the travelling family. The salary offered should take into account these circumstances.

The accommodation provided should be comfortable and private. A double bed, furniture and free use of WiFi are expected. They may live in a room, on a floor with other staff or in an outbuilding apartment. On some occasions, the butler will live external to the property.

  1. Car

Some estate managers are asked to pick up things or run errands. This requires the use of a vehicle and the family should allocate the use of one to the staff and make sure they are insured to use it. If the estate manager uses their car, the costs of this should be reimbursed by the employer.

  1. Commute

If your butler does not live in the residence, you will need a professional who lives close by. This will also enable flexibility in working hours. Live-in house managers deliver a lower Covid infection risk.

  1. Travel

The salary of the estate manager should be increased accordingly if they take on more hours or are away from family for a significant period. This is most likely to occur if they are asked to travel with the family, such as on trips abroad.
